Thank you! I can see it – a wistful goodbye to a year and a hopeful look towards the new one… I hadn’t thought of that, but I really like that perspective :)
The color choices and stippling really caught my eye on this one, same with that wonderful expression. Really loving how the abstract shapes in the background still make for a believable city skyline! Must be that vintage styling that helps it. I can easily envision this one on a newsstand of yesteryear, though maybe in some alternate history where This Sort Of Zine isn’t held behind the counter and possibly wrapped in plain paper…
Aaaaah, thank you! Those are the exact things I was going for, it makes me so happy it came through. I’m enamored with the golden age of american illustration; I’m fascinated with how, with the fast pace demanded commercial work, illustrators fill in every crack with their artistry and personality, and mid-century press and advertising (right before photography killed it as a standard… so it goes) were the apex of it, in my opinion. The push and pull between technical competence measured down to a work hour, and personal style and passion, fascinates me wherever I see it.
My inspiration for this was James R. Bingham, if you want to check him out. His composition and storytelling were *terrific*, especially when in mono- or duochrome (I feel like his full-color artwork didn’t have as much of a punch).
Anyway. Sorry for the unbidden rant. Thank you for the comment!
Terrific work! Has a real end-of-year feeling to me.
