Ship in a Bottle

“Look, Edgerton left his coat,” said one clerk, pulling it from the hook in the convenient modern closet the new building’s architects had included in the office.

The other snorted. “I doubt he’ll be coming back for it, after that exit.”

“It’s good enough cloth.” The first rubbed the dense boiled wool between thumb and fingers.

“To hear him tell it, he could buy a hundred coats tomorrow and never feel a dent.”

“Hmm. It’ll never fit me.” The clerk glanced over. “It’ll never fit you.”

“Yes, yes, I am short, thank you for reminding me. Why is Edgerton’s abandoned coat any concern of yours?”

“We binned thirty years of flotsam and jetsam when we moved. Why do we have to immediately start cluttering the new place up?” The clerk stretched out a long arm and dropped the coat on the farthest hook at the back of the closet. “If it’s still here in the spring, I’ll bundle it up for the church rummage sale. Don’t let me forget.”

An Origin

On a hot dry afternoon in Lucknow, two naturally reticent men were seated across each other for afternoon tea, and after attempting to avoid direct eye contact for a few minutes, their resultant conversation, more or less, went about as this:

“The weather,” Edmund said.

“Yes, the sky,” muttered Mr. Korrapati.

“Is very—”

“Blue,” said Mr. Korrapati.

“It is,” Edmund said. He noted how crisp and clear Mr. Korrapati’s English was, but such things had stopped surprising him during his two years soldiering for the British Raj. He had been naive, when he first arrived, presuming that mastery of English somehow dissipated once one left the blue confines of the English Channel. This was very obviously not true, however. Mr. Korrapati’s elegantly formed vowels could put his own speech to shame. Not that he minded, really. It was not a competition, no matter what his companions thought. Plenty enough room for everybody to excel, English or Indian or otherwise.

“It feels like another world up here.” Geoff looked out the window at the trees blurring past as they drove, scattered with twisted, spindly pines and white flashes of birch. Even the soil had changed, sandy and pale.

“It’s kinda magic,” Brannon looked over at Geoff for just a moment, before maneuvering the car off I-75 onto an empty exit headed east. The sun set in a riot of red-oranges behind them, giving the illusion of truth to Brannon’s words. “It’s why I own a house up here and rent a place in Detroit. Everything falls away when I drive up North and see the landscape shift, and it’s just…magic,” he repeated, voice falling soft.

“It just makes sense.” Geoff reached across the console and laid a hand on Brannon’s thigh; when Brannon dropped his hand to cover it, Geoff lifted Brannon’s hand and pressed a soft kiss to the palm, lips lingering against warm skin.

“That’s distracting when I’m driving.” Brannon’s hand jerked back to the wheel, but his face was hot with pleasure.

“Fair enough.” Geoff smiled as he eyed his…significant other? Boyfriend? Lover? All the terms seemed either too clinical or relied on language he wasn’t comfortable using. Relationship and sexual labels had never been Geoff’s friend, but Brannon loved them.

Gay. Kinky. Submissive.

Watch

“Perhaps they’ve forgotten about us.”

“Don’t be silly,” said Jian, whittling at a knot he’d cut off the firewood. Bai had observed that Jian seemed to have no skill at whittling, and Jian had pointed out that he had nothing but time in which to improve. “They’ll probably send our relief tomorrow.”

Bai didn’t even bother turning from the sunset-painted landscape to fix him with a withering glare. “This is the seventh day in a row you’ve said that.”

“And the seventh day in a row you’ve said the opposite, and won’t you feel silly when dawn comes and we see them trudging up the path?”

Bai didn’t have to look to see Jian’s idiot grin. Jian was an optimist. Bai hated optimists.

“Won’t I,” was all Bai said in reply. He kept his eye trained at a single spot in the growing dark, spine straight, waiting for light.

What Jack Ketch Knows Knot

“Let me down!”

“Only if you ask nicely.”

“Fuck you, Tracker!” The man caught in the trap spat, spinning on the rope around his ankle. In the alley, his curses echoed betweens the buildings, the only light from a single streetlamp on the corner.

“That wasn’t very nice at all,” Tracker murmured. He crossed his arms over his chest and watched the man continue to turn. “You haven’t even introduced yourself. Obviously you know who I am.”

The man flailed his arms in an attempt to face Tracker. “Go fuck yourself. I ain’t telling you nothing.”

Tracker shrugged, the leather he wore squeaking. “Your call. You can either tell me who you are so I can cut you down and take you to the police, or you can keep cursing at me and I can leave you there for the police to find.” He glanced down at the watch on his wrist, then back up at the trapped man. “It’s only about two-thirty right now, so chances are good they won’t find you for a while.”

The man continued to thrash on the rope for a few more minutes, then scowled, the expression growing deeper each time he rotated to face Tracker again. “Bruiser. Let me down now.”

When Tracker said or did nothing, the man let out a frustrated growl. “Please.”

“That’s more like it.” Tracker stepped forward, grabbed the rope, and pulled a knife from his belt. “You might want to brace yourself.”

Gordon’s, Vodka, Kina Lillet

Obviously, David showing up somewhere dressed kind of way fancier than the occasion called for was not a sign anything crazy was going on. Ben questioned how comfortable anyone would be for a movie-watching couch night in anything more complicated than pajamas, but really, Ben would have been cool with wearing pajamas during one hundred percent of his life, while meanwhile he’d seen David fall asleep in an airport chair in a three piece suit. With the watch fob still on. Not that fob status would matter in comfort levels, but he felt it worth noting whenever he thought of it.

So, Ben had been all, ‘hey, why don’t you come over and we go crazy on some Daniel Craig James Bond movies?’ which was its own special secret code phrase that meant maybe clothes were not going to be really important in general, and if David had shown up at his door in linen pants and a dark button-down, well, maybe that was just what he was feeling for couch time that day. He looked good, but what else was new?

David rolling up to his door on a Tuesday afternoon looking like a big warm glass of hello ma’am was not unusual, not even a little. Ben got an eyeball of him quick before getting him all wrapped up in a hug, hands rubbing between David’s shoulders while he nuzzled up into his hair. It took about four seconds of that before he realized that David was only going half in on this hug thing. One arm was wrapped around him, but the other arm was really noncommittal and kind of cold and metallic and poking him in the side.

Ben pulled away just a little, enough to make a cruddy kind of face while he saw what the problem was. David was holding a garment bag over one arm, and the hanger hook had been getting friendly with his ribcage. David hadn’t mentioned he had a thing after, but it was David, and really, not surprising if he had a thing after that he’d need to get more dressed up for. Ben just had a little giggle thinking about how maybe he wouldn’t shower before he left, and would roll in to whatever he had to suit and tie up for with a bit of raunch going on.

Then, though, David pressed the garment bag to Ben’s chest and smiled at him. Smirked, really; it was all eyebrows and twinkles and just the edges of his mouth. “Lovely to see you, Benjamin,” he said. “Really looking forward to tonight.” He brushed a thumb along Ben’s collarbone, finding it beneath the thin fabric of the well-loved t-shirt he was wearing. “I’d like you to put what’s in here on for me,” he said, and then he leaned in to speak right into Ben’s ear. Well, leaned in and a little up. “And don’t put anything on underneath.”
