Stealer of Hearts
Stealer of Hearts is a story written by Kim Chee and illustrated by keelain. It ran in Issue 33 at http://s2b2.livejournal.com/195789.html, and is mirrored at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/stealer-of-hearts/.
From the author: "A lonely astrophysics professor falls into depression when his adopted son would rather work on a story with a pop-up book artist than spend time with him. Little does he know, the story they've created is coming true."
From the Slash Pile: "Nine year old Howie and his less than perfect father, Tom, are befriended by a favored author."
Don't be turned off by my less than perfect summary and warnings. I'm really bad at that part, especially because I don't want to spoil any of the story for you. Also, I'm continually amazed when I don't find things posted here that I would have thought were long since recommended.
This is a beautifully written, deeply moving story that just grabs your heartstrings and pulls, pulls, pulls to the breaking point. Kim Chee's character development makes you feel both the tenderness and alienation between father and son. As I read this, I couldn't decide who is monster and who is victim. You'll know by the end, but the imagery Kim Chee paints will make you second guess yourself. Keelain's illustration is fabulous. You've got to read this!
