Riverfront Blues is a story written by Aosora Hikaru. It ran in Issue 47, and can be found at http://s2b2.livejournal.com/267792.html and mirrored at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/riverfront-blues/.
Nate Rodriguez works in radio. He has a cat, Harvey, who is a glutton. He has a co-worker, John, who calls himself "Johnny Danger," and Nate has a huge crush on him.
DEEJAY ONE: Good morning, Detroit! You're listening to WROX in the morning. I'm Johnny Danger–
DEEJAY TWO: Hey, call yourself whatever you want. Whatever gets you the chicks. I'm Nate Rodriguez, and this is Rock Your Morning on WROX. Coming up: what does your choice of beer say about you? Find out in the eight o'clock hour.
DEEJAY TWO: I still think that's a stupid pornstar name if I ever heard one.
JOHNNY: And that would be Bobby Killjoy, the wet blanket.
From fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org: "Nate and John are radio co-hosts who start to fall for one another and eventually they get together."
From fairyninjas.wordpress.com: "A couple of DJs who are best buds on air spend some time together off-air and, well, you know the audience, guess where that’s going."
From pinboard.in: "Nate Rodriguez is a Detroit radio deejay, and after relocating has finally landed his dream gig — morning show co-host. He’s in trouble, though, with an unwanted (and perhaps unrequited) crush on his fellow co-host, John (A.K.A. Johnny Danger). Will Nate be able to get over his crush, or will the whole thing blow up in his face?"
Riverfront Blues is unconnected to other stories or universes.
First things first: I live near Detroit. The title itself is a reference to the city (as the city has a riverfront area, and you can totally see Canada). The story is heavily inspired by a pair of deejays who only recently picked up the morning show slot on the local alternative station (which is actually based in Windsor, ON, not Detroit even though based on call-ins most of its listener base is in the US).
The sports bar they go to is, in my head, CK Diggs. It's a sports bar I've been to a few times in my life and has really good Mai Tais, though neither Nate nor John orders one.
Harvey the cat is based on my cat, Baloo, even though she is gray and very fluffy and Harvey is neither.
