Mike Dies at the End is a story written by shukyou and illustrated by sairobi. It ran in Issue 12 and can be found at s2b2.livejournal.com/61440.html and shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/mike-dies-at-the-end/.

Summary[edit]

Two friends go into a house with a third man to investigate strange happenings. RealDolls are involved.

Solving the following riddle will reveal the awful secret behind the universe, assuming you do not go utterly mad in the attempt. If you already happen to know the awful secret behind the universe, feel free to skip ahead.

From the Slash Pile: " Time travel and psychics collide. Oh yeah, and Mike dies at the end."

From isweedan.livejournal.com: "Retelling of a book by David Wong now with added m/m! Psychic who solves paranormal problems with his bff/fuckbuddy gets call from cute gothy dude about Seriously Weird Stuff happening at local hunted house. Things happen and it is VERY EXCITING!"

Connections[edit]

Mike Dies at the End is a tongue-in-cheek homage to John Dies at the End, though the similarities are largely in the title, the first paragraph (which is, word for word, the same as the first paragraph of John Dies at the End), and the setup of two male friends who are able to see the hidden supernatural world. Oh, and the puns. There are some puns.

Mike Dies at the End is a direct prequel to This Story Is Full of Scorpions: Seriously, Dude, Don't Read It.

External Reviews[edit]

This is my favorite s2b2 story. What's not to love? There's a snarky narrator, dangerous and creepy sex toys, linguistics, the worst use of Schroedinger's Cat ever, and the author manages to pull off the have-sex-or-die plot. It's crazy and sexy and funny and short enough that you won't lose much time ... until you decide to reread it.

  • pinboard.in: "Awesome and snarky tale that includes psychic herpes, time travel paradoxes, sexy piercings, and a terrifying gang of RealDolls."
  • pinboard.in: "Oh man, this is BRILLIANT. Gay psychic detectives! Rifts in space and time! Impossible paradoxes, real dolls, and a sweet romance."

all right, first of all this had me laughing in a moment when I shouldn’t have (read while there were too many people around me who had wanted to know why I was laughing…), when you will arrive to the “lie back and think of England”, you will understand why. This story is a funny romp, a satire about the usual ghost hunting stories; it remembers me a little that tv fiction where two buddy friends open a PI firm specialized in paranormal activities. Jason is gay, Mike is straight, but Jason is also single and Mike is “generous”, and so he let Jason have sex with him; but this situation cannot last long, and with the help of some very close friends, Jason will find his match in goth guy Ty. All of them Mike, Jason and Ty are really young, and so the feeling is that of a frat boys story with a paranormal twist. Very, very nice.
  • http://causeways.livejournal.com/187793.html: "If you liked Supernatural back in the day when there were ghosts and mysteries and shit (particularly if you enjoyed the Ghostfacers ep back in S3), I suspect you'll LOVE this story. It's a totally laugh-out-loud funny fuck-or-die fic that takes place in a haunted house. Trust me, you want to read this."
  • http://harmless-one.livejournal.com/40855.html: "one of the weirdest stories I had ever read up to that point. I did not know about the book and movie that inspired the story until years and years later, so I think at the time that the tone and humor were unusual to me. I didn't know what I was reading, but I knew I liked it. Nice and creepy with likeable characters and weirdness for days! I actually ended up watching a documentary about men who buy life-sized dolls for sex after reading this because I had to do research to figure out what the hell a RealDoll was. So, yes, definitely a story that sticks with you."
