A man who sold out his country may or may not have to confront his demons.
There was a demon at the end of the table, sitting upright like a man, hands folded atop the polished wood, wearing a storm-grey uniform with shoulder patches and bars that no doubt indicated rank to those that could read the language of insignia, skin sickly pale, easily half a head taller than anyone else around it; and its strange yellow eyes fixed on Tenzjin the moment he walked into the room.
This story also includes a very non-consensual exorcism (though the demon's consent is sort of antithetical to the point of exorcism, isn't it?).
http://isis.dreamwidth.org/77353.html: "One character may or may not be a demon; another has betrayed his country, and feels he deserves death, and that the demon has come to kill him...naturally, they end up having lots of extremely hot sex instead."
Technically, Bright Mouths occurs in the same universe as The Red Woman and The White Palace, though thousands of years later than either and in a much more technological setting; science has mostly replaced magic, and no one remembers that there are dragons asleep beneath the mountains.
Bright Mouths has been featured on GoodReads.

This story, like so many others of mine, came out of a collaboration with friends. When I say I couldn't have done this without relvetica, I mean it. Pretty much anything and everything neat about Mot, she gets total wonderful credit.
I won't deny that there's a fandom inspiration for this, but it's some old-school inspiration, and unless you've been hanging around us for a while, it's probably not obvious. At least, I hope it's not obvious. If it is, don't tell me.
There's not much else to be said about the story itself, though I do want to point out that the title comes from an Electric President song of the same name. You can hear the song itself here, and you can get samples, videos, and more information about the whole Sleep Well album here. I highly recommend it, and I can't count how many times I listened to it while writing this.
- pinboard.in: "Tenzjin, conflicted representative of a conquered people, is half-convinced that the soldier Mot is a demon. Two cultures meet and clash - sexily!, but also thoughtfully."
